Inside Editorial Process

From 2012 to 2013, I worked as Creative Designer on The Journal, a luxury newspaper produced by Luxhabitat, under Creative Director Karl Ibrahim. I also contributed to Luxhabitat Magazine. I collaborated closely with Editor Sandra Lane, refining layouts and enhancing imagery to meet premium editorial standards. Distributed at Dubai and Abu Dhabi airports, Emirates and Etihad Airways luxury lounges, and the lobbies of UAE’s top five-star hotels, this paper was positioned at the highest level of visibility. Featuring advertisers like Rolls-Royce, Gucci, Prada, Hugo Boss, Omega, MB&F, and Montblanc, The Journal was more than a newspaper. It was a curated luxury experience in print.

Vision

Vision

The Journal was created to reflect a life well-lived. It wasn’t designed for the mainstream but for those who seek elegance, exclusivity, and elevated thinking. With feature sections like ‘Divine Designs’, ‘Property News’, and ‘Most Coveted’, the content highlighted Dubai’s unique blend of global luxury and cultural sophistication.

Each layout balanced story and aesthetic with clarity. We crafted visual narratives that appealed to the discerning reader, capturing everything from bespoke interiors to adrenaline-filled road tests and waterfront real estate.

Craft

Craft

As Creative Designer, my tools were Adobe InDesign for layouts and Photoshop for retouching. But the real work was in the thinking. I reviewed all content and image submissions from Sandra Lane and consistently requested stronger photography to match the tone of the design.

Working under Creative Director Karl Ibrahim refined my eye for structure and editorial hierarchy. Every spread had to feel intentional. The balance of type, white space, and image placement was treated like architecturequiet, strong, and elegant.

Legacy

Legacy

The Journal was a product of Luxhabitat and editorially led by Jola Chudy and Sandra Lane, both renowned for their work with The Rake and Revolution. Two of the world’s top fashion and watch publications. This mentorship shaped my editorial discipline and visual style.

The Journal was found in elite spaces like Emirates and Etihad Airways lounges, luxury hotel lobbies, and VIP airport terminals. With prestige advertisers including A. Lange & Söhne, Brioni, deLaCour GENEVE, ARTIOLI, Montblanc, and LANVIN Paris, the publication positioned itself as a timeless benchmark in luxury media.
